The Curious Incident of the Dog in the...

OCTOBER 18TH, 2015

Brain Power’s book club read Mark Haddon’s Whitbread Award winning “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” A story about a 15-year-old boy who sees the world in a way that differentiates him from most people, it is also a fascinating mystery novel, and a lesson in empathy and “seeing the world through someone else’s eyes.” We had a fascinating discussion about this novel, considering how people who see the world differently (e.g. people with autism) deal with...

Roman Baber

JUNE 19TH, 2015

Brain Power was honoured to have Roman Baber, B.A., LL.B as guest lecturer in our Public Speaking class. His incredible teaching skills enabled our students to enhance both their negotiation strategies and their knowledge of the law.

Roman is a skilled and results-oriented litigator. He has argued numerous cases before all levels of Ontario Courts, including a number of appeals before the Ontario Court of Appeal. Our class had a wonderful learning experience!

Brain Power’s HQ original construction consisted entirely of recycled, non-toxic, local materials (including pressed-juice box walls instead of drywall and reclaimed cotton jeans instead of typical fiberglass insulation). Our leftover construction materials were up-cycled by the students into a giant 8’x 8’ brain sculpture titled “Re-Think,” which used to grace the entranceway of Brain Power. ...

The Debaters – 2014/15

OCTOBER 19TH, 2014

Brain Power’s Public Speaking students went to a hilarious live recording of CBC’s “The Debaters” with Steve Patterson!

Watching professional comedians conduct debates where “the facts and the funny” were equally matched was a great way for students to see some effective and some not-so-effective rhetorical strategies in practice. It was also a great way to have some fun with what we’ve been learning! Who knew logical fallacies could be so entertaining!
