Novel Study
Grades: 4-6
In our Novel Study workshop, students will read, discuss, debate, and analyze an entertaining and intellectually challenging novel together (see below) — under the guidance of amazing, PhD-educated instructors! At the end of the workshop, we will have an optional group screening and discussion of the film version of the book (with popcorn!).
In the process of this exciting literary adventure, students will practice the “close reading” skills necessary to get the most out of almost any text — whether for pleasure or academic interest — including how to isolate and analyze literary elements, central themes, and key ideas. Taking the discussion beyond the confines of the classroom, students will also be encouraged to make “real-world connections” to the text (e.g. considering it in light of current news events) and debate its relevance to the modern world and their own lives. Finally, students will have the opportunity to write thoughtful academic responses to literature that will be useful models for success in their English classes.

The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill
Every year, the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. But the witch in the Forest, Xan, is kind. Xan rescues the children and delivers them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey.
One year, Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic. Xan decides she must raise this girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own. As Luna’s thirteenth birthday approaches, her magic begins to emerge—with dangerous consequences.
