Cracking Cases: Reasoning and Logic (St. James Lutheran ONLY)
Only at St. James Lutheran School
2101 N Freemont Street, Chicago, IL 60614
Tue., Jan. 5-Mar. 16, 3:00-4:00 pm

For the number lover, the word lover, and the creative dreamer with a wild theory: every budding detective ready to discover that cracking a case takes all three.
Can a single mystery teach reading, logic, mathematics, and science in the same hour? Cracking Cases was designed by a team of Brain Power PhDs and experts from several disciplines to do exactly that, weaving science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics into one detective story built on close reading.
In each case, young detectives read a short mystery written for the program, use arithmetic and logic to test alibis, analyze scientific and visual clues, decode layered ciphers, learn about a new place or historical time period, and solve a case with evidence. Along the way they practise what the philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce called abduction: choosing the explanation that accounts for every clue. It is the same reasoning doctors use to diagnose and scientists use to explain an experiment. And children discover something true about the world beyond the classroom: real problems rarely arrive sorted by school subject.
This program empowers young learners not just to get the right answer—but to think about how they think. And it’s only available in this form to St. James Lutheran School.
“William absolutely loved this program… This has made a difference in his interest and engagement in both language and math.” Parent, Cracking Cases
