Dr. Ana-Maria Jerca, Dr. Karine Rashkovsky, Brain Power students and families (…and even one BP alumni from Queen’s University!) attended a theatre-outing to enjoy Oscar Wilde’s classic play “The Importance of Being Earnest” at the Capitol Theatre in Port Hope, Ontario.

Students in Intermediate and Senior Language Arts have been studying Oscar Wilde at Brain Power. What a treat to enjoy this great masterpiece together with live theatre!

Post-show, we all congregated outdoors under the stars to deliberate the deeper takeaways from the play. We indulged in wonderful conversation that included, but was not limited to: Wildean wit, Wilde’s characters’ names and “authenticity,” and whether true virtue and wickedness appear in the play.

The students had such a wonderful time learning about Canada’s court structure and how the Supreme Court got its power and continues to hear appeals.

Brain Power Public Speaking student Daniel Khazin rocked the stage in front of an audience of 600+ people! He’s 15 years old, and he impressed everyone with his speech (standing ovation!) on the assigned theme: “Conquer.” Daniel wrote the following to our founder, Dr. Karine Rashkovsky:

“Thank you so much for providing me with an amazing experience and being an amazing mentor to me. I had a blast yesterday at Speaker Slam. Thank you so much for your dedication and support!”

In the main competition, Dang Nguyen won the grand prize, and he is now Canada’s #1 Inspirational Speaker. Dang was an inspiration to all in attendance!

He came to speak to Brain Power Public Speaking students in November, and he wrote a very kind thank you note to Karine for the mentorship and coaching she provided before his big win.

The students, who have been practicing a range of presentation skills, worked with a professional voice coach and sound engineer to perfect their final products.

 They had an amazing time and learned so much!

The students’ fascinating topics included some of the below: 

  • the pitfalls of modern music
  • the climate change crisis
  • the future of automation
  • school policies that desperately need change
  • why being an entrepreneur is a great decision
  • the sadness of losing a pet
  • how to choose a career that aligns with one’s passions
  • the beauty of the overlooked: light and its role in our lives

On November 28, Dr. Karine Rashkovsky’s Public Speaking classes attended the 2018 Grand Slam, an inspirational public speaking competition hosted by Speaker Slam! The event was held at Jane Mallett Theatre in Toronto, and it was absolutely incredible! What a fantastic lineup of inspirational speakers and infectious energy!

Our students were impressed, and some were even inspired to take the stage themselves for the “Spontaneous Passion” portion of the evening , while the judges were making their decisions on the top three professional speakers!

We had nearly 50 Public Speaking students (and some parents and siblings) join us as well as several Brain Power Public Speaking alumni (see image above): Jane Illiaranova, Slava Samokhina, Nicole Rayskin, and Erik Fridman!

What a fabulous and memorable experience!
